Welcome to our Member of the Month section. The idea of this is to feature a runner each month who has done something significant within the club. We are not necessarily talking about the fastest runner; more so someone who has been improving or performing well, who has recently completed a race, or is a general inspiration around the club.

When did you start running?

First timed run was at Yeppoon for Couch to Classic with Lisa and family. The following year we joined RRR.


What has been your most memorable running/racing experience?

Most memorable experience would be my first marathon in Melbourne.  Had a couple of hamstring cramps during the race but I was lucky as I ran most of the race with Matt Arnold who gave me tips during the race to avoid any mishaps during the drink stops.


What motivated you to start running?

Started running just around the block with Milo my Border Collie and also I travel a bit with work and before Joining the club I just used to go for a run. Didn’t have a watch pace tracker so it was a 30min run around the block or town where ever I was.


Do you have a running role model? 

Two that come to mind are Lance Plahn and Bruce Manly. Two Master runners that still go for runs and enjoy themselves which encourages me to look forward to many years of running ahead.


How often do you run and what does your training involve?

Usually 3 to 4 times a week.  Normally a Tuesday track set, Weds Warrior 10K run, Thurs Club run and a Sat Long run


Who is your favourite running partner and why?

Michael McGrath, since he has been running with a club a long time and knows the history of the town and has a lot of stories about the runs, the places we run and where the dogs used to live and how they used to come out to say hello

What do you do outside of running?

Eat Chocolate.


Have you ever had an injury that stopped you from running?

Two years ago I had a fractured little toe. Lucky for me it happened the night after the Rocky River Run. The upside of it was I got to volunteer at Park Run

What is your favourite place to go for a run?

Castle Hill in Townsville. The view at the top is awesome and there is always a crowd on the way up and down, morning or night

Do you have a favourite motivational quote?

If it doesn't challenge you, it will not change you. Tamika L. Sims.


If you could run anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Great Ocean Road Run in Victoria

What is one part of your racing routine you can’t do without?

Cup of black tea before race.


In the next year, what running goals do you hope to accomplish?

Run another marathon without stopping for cramps and do a 30K trail run
